NEVADA

CEKIS + Make The Road Nevada

‘A call to activism through art in southern Nevada’ is how community members are describing this mural led by internationally recognized street artist Nelson ‘Cekis’ Rivas. Make the Road Nevada, Popular Democracy and other activist groups united to create ‘Vota Por Tu Comunidad’, a mural dedicated to civic engagement. Seizing the opportunity to work with Cekis, a pioneer in Latin America’s graffiti scene, they wanted to make sure to create a local and global collaboration. Via Las Vegas’s very own Raow Raow Collective and Hip Hop artist Olmeca, they connected with local artists. This became the local-global art collaboration in east Las Vegas between Cekis, Pedro Quintanilla, and Pink House Creations. The colorful mural urges people to get involved on issues affecting immigrant and working class communities in southern Nevada; with a call to action for all community members to recognize their potential impact in shaping their future through active participation in voting and civic activities. Upon seeing the work of art, a local community member commented that “art is a vehicle, voting is a vehicle, and what you're seeing here is the marriage of the two- a gift to our neighborhood."
